The legendary origin of their name remains relatively obscure. Some say it is the name of the cigarette paper used at the time by the members of the group. For others, the group would have taken this name so that their albums are always the last in the record tanks (vinyls at the time) of all the record stores (the classification in these bins being most often alphabetical). A rumor also persists about the fact that it is simply a typo, the group to be called initially '22 top' and not 'zz top'. The name may also come from the blues artist Z. Hill Z. (en) ; hill meaning 'hill' hence 'top of the hill' = ZZ Top.
